The California Prune Board has expressed support for the recent progress made by the United States and the European Union toward a fair trade agreement. The organization welcomed the framework outlined in an official White House joint statement, which aims to establish reciprocal and balanced trade relations between the two regions.

Donn Zea, Executive Director of the California Prune Board, stated, “The EU is one of the most important markets for California Prunes, representing more than $27 million in annual value. The announcement of these details is an encouraging step toward fair trade, and we strongly support efforts to ensure prunes are part of the final agreement. For growers and handlers across California, securing fair access to the EU isn’t just about tariffs, it’s about protecting our future in this critical market and sustaining the agricultural communities here at home that help feed the world.”

According to information from both parties, the joint statement indicates that preferential market access will be provided by the EU for a variety of U.S. agricultural products. This includes fresh and processed fruits such as prunes. Prunes produced in California account for nearly all U.S. output and are recognized internationally for their quality standards.

The California Prune Board has indicated its intention to remain involved with negotiators as discussions continue on finalizing terms. The board seeks assurance that prunes and prune juice will be included in any resulting agreement so that growers can compete fairly on a global scale.

Founded in 1980 under authorization from the California Secretary of Food and Agriculture, the California Prune Board represents local growers and handlers. The state leads global premium prune production with orchards located primarily in Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys.
