With the holiday season approaching, gardening enthusiasts may find new inspiration in two recently published books that cater to both culinary and ornamental interests.
Linda Ziedrich, a recognized Master Gardener and Master Food Preserver, offers “The Curious Kitchen Gardener: Uncommon Plants and How to Eat Them.” The book reflects on 45 years of her gardening experience across locations including Palo Alto, California; Somerville, Massachusetts; and Oregon’s Willamette Valley. According to Ziedrich, “the book is part cookbook but does focus more on gardening than cooking.” She adds that it provides an introduction to the history of underused edible plants as well as their growing and harvest needs. Each chapter includes a recipe featuring a lesser-known plant such as sweet violets or black and blue tomatoes.
Another recommended title is “A Year in Bloom: Flowering Bulbs for Every Season” by Lucy Bellamy with photography by Jason Ingram. This guide highlights bulbs as foundational elements for year-round garden interest, covering over 150 varieties from tulips to autumn snowflakes. The book organizes information seasonally, providing advice on planting bulbs for continuous blooms throughout the year. It also addresses different garden settings—borders, containers, and naturalized areas—and features guidance on bulbs known for scent or pollinator attraction.
Both books present seasonal insights and practical tips intended to appeal to gardeners looking for fresh ideas or unique gifts.
