Farmers across the United States face significant stress due to factors such as market changes and pest problems, with the pressures of farm life often affecting both work and home. According to recent data, one in four U.S. farmers experience mental health issues.

A range of hotlines and resources are available for farmers seeking support. These services are confidential and free of charge, offering assistance for various mental health concerns.

The Farm Aid Hotline has been active for nearly 40 years, connecting family farmers with mental health resources, legal help, and disaster support. Operators are available in English or Spanish Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST at 1-800-FARM-AID (1-800-327-6243).

Avera Health operates the Farm and Rural Stress Hotline, serving the Upper Midwest region around the clock at 1-800-691-4336.

The AgriStress Helpline provides specialized support for agricultural communities in several states, including Colorado, Missouri, Texas, and others. Farmers can call or text 833-897-2474 at any time; phone support is available in 160 languages while text support is offered in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

For those in southern states, Puerto Rico, or the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Southern Ag Exchange Network (SAgE) offers a hotline at 833-381-SAGE for regional support.

Substance abuse remains a concern among rural populations. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s National Helpline refers individuals to local treatment centers and community groups at 1-800-662-HELP (1-800-662-4357), providing service around the clock in English and Spanish.

The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline connects callers with local crisis centers nationwide. “We understand that every struggle is different,” says the network. Support is available by calling or texting 988 at any time.

211 is a national network that helps connect people with local services related to healthcare and financial assistance. Last year alone, more than 15 million referrals were made through this system.

The Mental Health Hotline provides emotional support on various topics including anxiety and depression at 866-903-3787 on a continuous basis.

For those who prefer texting or online communication over speaking by phone, Crisis Text Line offers help via text message by sending HOME to 741741 or through online chat options.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) HelpLine gives peer-to-peer support from trained staff who have personal experience with mental health challenges. Callers can reach out Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. by calling 1-800-950-NAMI (1-800-950-6264) or texting HelpLine to 62640.

In emergencies where there is an immediate risk of harm, individuals should call 911 for urgent response from medical personnel or law enforcement across the United States.

Farmer’s Business Network (FBN) also provides additional resources tailored for farmers:
FBN Forum enables members—currently numbering over 120,000—to discuss farming challenges online.
FBN Events are held regularly within rural communities where FBN employees live and work.
Both initiatives aim to foster connection among farmers facing similar stresses.
