The UC Master Gardener Program is inviting community members to participate in its ongoing Kitchen Garden Chat, held via Zoom on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The program aims to support both new and experienced gardeners in Yolo County by discussing what can be planted and harvested throughout the year.
Treva Valentine, who has been involved with the UC Master Gardener Program for three decades, noted that gardening in Yolo County can be a year-round activity due to the region’s climate. “Knowing what to plant at specific times of the year was only part of the challenge when the COVID lockdown spawned so many new gardeners. The class quickly moved to the Zoom format, which we still use today in order to make it easy for anyone to join us,” Valentine said.
The monthly sessions cover topics such as pest management, weather challenges, seed starting and saving, crop rotation, soil improvement through cover crops, composting, and mulching. Valentine described the class as having a relaxed format where participants are encouraged to ask any questions related to edible gardening: “The class has a relaxed format where ‘any question is welcome as long as it is about edibles.’ This flexibility opens many discussions that allow me to go off topic, but educate us all in the process.”
Valentine encourages interested individuals to check the UC Master Gardeners-Yolo Upcoming Events webpage before each session for updated information and access details.
